Andy Hein will take over as the California Baptist University men's volleyball assistant coach after Derek Schmitt took over the head coaching responsibilities this summer, as announced by Director of Athletics Dr. Micah Parker. In Hein, the Lancers have a wealth of collegiate, professional experience, having played for three different professional teams overseas. The 2006 Pepperdine graduate has also coached at several of the elite camps in the nation over the past six years, in addition to a seven-year run playing with the United States Men's Volleyball Team. "Andy brings a depth of experience that will greatly benefit us," Director of Athletics Dr. Micah Parker said. "He knows what it takes to excel at the highest levels, having played at the top of the collegiate, professional and international ranks. We are excited to have him on board." Hein comes to CBU after serving as a coach at the Gold Medal Squared and USA High Performance volleyball camps this summer. Prior to that, Hein assisted his former and Pepperdine's current coach Marv Dunphy at his annual summer camps from 2010-14. Hein got his start coaching at the Sports Performance Boys' Volleyball Club, where he started in the winter of 2008 and remained until the spring of 2009. Over the past eight years, Hein played professionally overseas as a middle blocker. He traveled all over the world with stops in Romania (Tomis Constanta), Puerto Rico (Los Changos de Naranjito), Greece (GC Lamia), Russia (Yaroslavi Yaroslavich), Switzerland (VC Lausanne), Italy (Fidi Padova), France (Spacers Toulouse) and Austria (Hype Tirol). Hein also played for the U.S. National Team in the World League in 2009 and 2010. He also competed in the NORCECA Continental Championship, FIVB World Championships, Pan American Games, America's Cup and World University Games at least once. He won six medals over that span, including gold at the 2010 FIVB World Championship Qualifier for NORCECA Group F and 2008 Pan American Cup. All of Hein's international success was set up by a decorated collegiate career at Pepperdine. He earned American Volleyball Coaches Association first team All-American honors as a junior and senior. He led the nation in hitting percentage that season, as well, with a .516 mark and 2.93 kills a set. He established himself as a clutch player in 2005 by breaking a 15-year-old school record by hitting .909 (10-0-11) in the MPSF Championship match and then logging seven kills and seven blocks in the NCAA Championship match. Hein is currently pursuing a master's of business administration, with an emphasis in general management and finance, from the DeVry University Keller Graduate School. His bachelors from Pepperdine is in psychology. He is also an active member of the National Society of Leadership & Success. In 2011, Hein married his wife, Kate.
