The Cost of a Mistake: Lessons from Loma Linda’s DUI Patrols

The evening of February 27, 2026 was like many others in Loma Linda—lights twinkling, streets buzzing, and residents heading out to enjoy the night. But while the city went about its routine, the Loma Linda Police Department was on alert, conducting DUI patrols from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., stopping drivers suspected of being under the influence and reminding everyone that impaired driving is a preventable choice. This patrol was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reflecting Loma Linda’s commitment to protecting residents on every street and corner.

“Impaired driving is preventable,” Corporal Matthew Magdaleno said. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or taken drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”

That night highlighted an important truth: impaired driving isn’t just about alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and even legal marijuana can affect your ability to drive safely. Following dosage instructions, reading warning labels, and remembering that driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal can make all the difference.

For those planning a night out, the safest approach is simple: designate a sober driver, call a rideshare, or plan to stay overnight. The stakes are real—a first-time DUI can cost around $13,500 in fines and lead to a suspended license.

But the consequences of impaired driving go far beyond fines or legal penalties. Every choice behind the wheel can have lasting impacts on your life and the lives of others. Alcohol-impaired driving is one of the nation’s most serious traffic safety issues, with thousands of deaths every year and roughly 30% of all traffic fatalities involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit. Impaired drivers have slowed reaction times, reduced coordination, and diminished judgment, making accidents far more likely and often more severe. Victims and their loved ones may face lifelong emotional trauma, financial strain from medical costs and lost wages, and the devastating loss of life that could have been prevented. Even for the driver, a DUI conviction can disrupt careers, strain relationships, increase insurance premiums, and haunt future opportunities long after fines and legal penalties are paid.

That night serves as a clear reminder: every choice behind the wheel matters. Choosing safety isn’t just following the law—it’s protecting yourself, your friends, and everyone sharing the road in Loma Linda.
