At the recent Council Meeting Dec 20, Council Member Dr.G (Dr. Luis S. González) presented Ruben Martinez, owner of Colton Cuts Barber Shop with a Business Focus Recognition Award for their successful business in the City of Colton. Located at 632 West Valley Blvd, this vibrant barber shop is located along the business corridor across from Colton High School.

As many already know, this business is a popular barber shop amongst the younger generation and boasts a growing clientele, great service and a fun “Colton Vib” atmosphere.

Mr. Ruben has a long-time connection with Dr.G. He was a student at CHS during Dr.G’s Band Director days, and he also started his business (Colton Cuts) in 2014, the same year Dr.G. began serving on the City Council. In addition, they both actively serve in the church and are strong Christians. “I’d like to thank God for keeping us afloat for 12 years,” exclaimed Ruben when asked about his success. Reuben is also Dr.G’s barber, so when he comes in for a haircut, they share old stories and catch up with all the happenings in and around town. It’s always a blessing to see former students doing well. In addition, Ruben has indicated an interest in civic affairs, so perhaps in the near future, we may see him participating at Council meetings.

Originally established in 1999, this barber shop was called “The Colton Cut” and was owned by Isaac Adame. After a few years, a young Reuben, age 16, came into the shop to get a haircut and continued to frequent the place until around 2010, when Reuben landed a job at the Barber Shop as a barber. In 2014, Reuben bought the business and changed the name to “Colton Cuts Barber Shop.”

As a new owner, Mr. Ruben worked long hours to build his reputation and his customer base, and has survived through several lean years and the pandemic.

Not only has the clientele grown, but his presence in the community, especially with the high school, has encouraged young men and women to participate in community engagement, education, and church attendance. With his energy and connection to the community, Ruben has been a guiding light for many young entrepreneurs.

Mr. Ruben Martinez, and his crew are to be congratulated for their success as a local barber shop. This year, he celebrates 12 years of successful ownership and states, “I would like to thank the Colton community and our staff for keeping Colton handsome 1 cut at a time.” We truly hope that they will continue their successful business for years to come. The Colton City Council also wanted to recognize them for their hard work, great customer service, and excellent reputation; and for making a valuable contribution to our community and to our local economy.
