At the recent Council meeting August 18, the Colton City Council appointed Kimberly Huerta as Youth Commissioner to the Recreation and Parks Commission for FY 26/27.
Kimberly attends Colton High School, carries a 4.0 GPA this quarter, is enrolled in two AP classes, and is part of the AVID program. She is currently in 11th grade, which works well with her class schedule as she will be able to serve consistently her entire junior year on the commission. She also knows about the expectations of serving as Youth Commissioner and has agreed to the attendance and participation requirements as a non-voting member.
As part of this appointment, Kimberly will also begin serving as Chair of the City of Colton Youth Council, a five-member student board that meets monthly to learn about leadership, Colton history, city operations, and service to the community. The City Council continues to support this program and has created the Youth Commissioner position to provide additional civic experiences to outstanding and well-deserving students. The City Council unanimously confirmed this appointment, which means Kimberly will officially start her service to the Recreation and Parks Commission September 16, once she has been introduced and sworn in. “It was a true blessing to be selected as Youth Commissioner by the Council,” reflected Kimberly who added, “I’m honored to also serve as Chair.”
As a Youth Commissioner, Kimberly will attend the regular meetings and give a report about the activities of the Youth Council. She will also have an opportunity to weigh-in on the commission agenda items, but as a non-voting member. The Recreation and Parks Commission is a vital component part of official city operations, as all of its programs and activities are designed for the enrichment of community life in Colton. The five-members of the board are appointed by each Council Member and serve in conjunction to the respective Council member’s term. The Youth Commissioner’s term, however, is one year.
This opportunity is definitely unique, an amazing experience and yet challenging. Kimberly Huerta is certain ready for the task of serving as Youth Commissioner on the Recreation and Parks Commission and leading the Youth Council.
