What Only Paint Can Do

On Sunday, September 8, from 2 to 4 pm, the Loma Linda Cultural Arts Association is delighted to present Robert Sherrill, oil painter, as our demonstrating artist. Sherrill’s artistic talents emerged early in life, and he began to express them early.  His favorite “extra-curricular” activity during high-school years was creating scenic backdrops for school plays at Arlington High School, in Riverside, CA.

Along the way, he competed in regional shows. After his acceptance into Art Center, he sought display space wherever possible, at times enhancing various commercial enterprises (cafes, antique stores) with “mini-shows” of his art.  Sherrill left early employment as a technical draftsman to become a successful Designer and Art Director, but found that even prosperity couldn’t take the place of painting and Paint! During the ‘90's, while teaching drawing and Introduction to Painting at the Art Center College of Design, he had this to say:

“Around the turn of the last century, painting began to lose ground to commercial arts, photography and movies. Painters began searching for new ways to express what only paint could do…(F)everish exploration arose in the form of many different Movements…(Impressionism, Abstraction, etc.) Today, many painters…(produce) tactile images that force the viewers to…lose themselves in the image portrayed. Nothing is as raw and basic and subtle as the organic substance called PAINT.”

Currently, Robert Sherrill paints a variety of subjects on Commission. The public is warmly invited to watch him demonstrate techniques, and learn more about his philosophy of art, as he lectures on September 8. LLCAA meetings are held in the Loma Linda Civic Center, located at the southeastern corner of the LL Civic Complex, 25541 Barton Road.  A $5 donation is requested of non-members; there is no cost to LLU students.
