The Preschool Services Department (PSD) recently celebrated the grand opening of the Whitney Young Head Start Preschool, located at 1755 W. Maple St. in San Bernardino.

Since 1965, Head Start has supported over 39 million children and their families nationwide, preparing them for success in school and beyond. The Head Start program serves children aged 3 to 5 years and focuses on early childhood education, health, nutrition and family well-being, creating positive change in communities nationwide. The Whitney Young site also serves toddlers aged 24 to 36 months through the Early Head Start program, which emphasizes learning opportunities throughout the day to prepare them for the Head Start program.

“This site embodies the goals we have moving forward,” said PSD Interim Director Arlene Molina. “By the time our children go on to kindergarten, they will feel confident and prepared.”

Board of Supervisors Vice Chair and Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr., San Bernardino County Assistant Executive Officer Diana Alexander, and Director of Policy and Public Relations for the San Bernardino County Housing Authority Nicole Beydler joined the ribbon-cutting ceremony and shared their vision for a bright future.

PSD offers comprehensive services to strengthen families, including healthcare, mental health support, transportation assistance and other resources, all provided by family support workers conveniently located onsite. “Families have identified the need for community support and are in a position to set goals towards stability and perhaps continuing education,” said Molina.
