Keeping Safety in Mind This Halloween

Halloween is full of fun, but safety should come first—especially for kids out trick-or-treating. Here’s a helpful guide:

For Kids:

  1. Costume Safety:

    • Choose bright or reflective costumes so drivers can see them.

    • Avoid masks that block vision; use face paint instead.

    • Make sure costumes fit well to prevent trips and falls.

  2. Trick-or-Treating Tips:

    • Always go with an adult or in a group.

    • Stick to familiar neighborhoods and well-lit streets.

    • Walk, don’t run, and use sidewalks whenever possible.

    • Carry a flashlight or glow stick.

  3. Candy Safety:

    • Inspect all treats before eating; throw away anything unwrapped or suspicious.

    • Check for allergies and avoid homemade treats from strangers if unsure.

For Parents and Adults:

  1. House Safety:

    • Keep pathways clear of obstacles and decorations that could cause trips.

    • Use battery-operated lights instead of real candles in jack-o’-lanterns.

    • Secure pets so they don’t accidentally scare or hurt trick-or-treaters.

  2. Driving Safety:

    • Slow down in residential areas.

    • Be extra cautious at crosswalks and intersections.

    • Watch for children in costumes who may be harder to see.

  3. COVID or Flu Precautions (Optional):

    • Use hand sanitizer after handling candy.

    • Consider individually wrapped candy and keeping surfaces clean.

Fun Extra Tip: Add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags—it makes kids much more visible after dark.
