Handling the Holidays While Experiencing Grief

For those who are already experiencing the overwhelming stress of bereavement, the additional strains of the holidays can create unbearable pressure. Those who have experienced the death of a family member or friend are invited to attend a free grief ceremony. This special event will take place at the Weisser Education Pavilion at 350 Terracina Blvd. in Redlands on Sunday, Nov. 22 from 2 - 4 p.m. Hospice Chaplain Steve Kay will provide insight on planning for the holidays while grieving, lead a compassionate memorial service and oversee a symbolic dove release. “During the holidays, many people are dealing with loss and are often caught in a predicament between the need to grieve and the pressure to get into the spirit of the season,” says Dr. Regan Douty, D.O. “This celebratory event allows our staff a chance to reconnect with the families they’ve grown so close to and honor the life of a family member or friend. Our bereavement team offers continued contact and support to families long after they’ve lost their loved ones, especially during the holiday season.” The Hospice Program at Redlands Community Hospital is a local, non-profit, community-based program that has helped hundreds of families over the years. This is the twenty-first year the hospital has conducted the ceremony. “Our hospice takes care of the whole family during a very emotional time,” says Gerry Smith director of home health and hospice services at Redlands Community Hospital. “But this special ceremony is a time to celebrate and remember loved ones.”
