ALL>> The Military Officers Association of America's California Council of Chapters recently announced that it has chosen Senator Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga) as its 2016 Legislator of the Year. "I'm humbled to receive this honor," Morrell said. "Our nation's heroes and their families give up so much in defense of our nation. As more veterans call California home than any other state, it is our duty to do all we can to enable them to build successful lives here, while at the same time ensure their service and sacrifice is never forgotten." The Cal-MOAA Legislator of the Year Award is given to a state senator or assembly member who has, in the previous year, worked to improve the lives of California's 1.8 million military retirees and veterans, as well as their dependents. In 2016, Morrell authored SB 1155, the Welcome Home Act. The bill would eliminate, for honorably discharged veterans, the initial fees required to obtain an occupational license in California. He was also a supporter and principal coauthor of SB 2, which would reduce the property tax burdens regarding Veterans Halls. Morrell annually sponsors the Patriots of the Past, Present and Future Recognition Ceremony in his district, at which he and the community honor local veterans, service members, and young leaders from around the region. The next event will be held on March 10, 2017. "Senator Morrell has great respect for veterans and he is involved in the veterans events and activities in his home district," said Colonel Lorna Griess, USA-Retired, Cal-MOAA Legislative Chair. "He brings a thoughtful and solid approach on how to help today's veterans to the Legislature." Previously, Morrell authored legislation to direct the State Fire Marshal to accept certification of military firefighter training for a civilian job, offer resident classification for veterans attending the state's colleges, stiffen penalties for the vandalism of Veterans Memorials, provide free and reduced cost hunting and sport fishing licenses for veterans, and a resolution on Purple Heart Day. Morrell represents the 23rd District in the State Senate which includes portions of Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles counties.
