Organizers of an upcoming community workshop say that two community garden sites owned by the city and have been abandoned have “the potential to become active hubs for community gatherings, workshops and food production,” according to a written release. The workshop at the Loma Linda Civic Center aims to increase awareness of backyard and community gardening, and to strengthen local networks of individuals and organizations interested in revitalizing these sites. The workshop will also focus on local tree planting and removal policies, with the aim of forming a tree committee working group to maintain the value that trees add to the local community. A local initiative to bring a farm share distribution program to employees, residents and students in Loma Linda will also be presented. Representatives from the City of Loma Linda, Loma Linda University, the City of Redlands, Old Grove Farm Share, UReach Community Outreach Center, Poplar Street Apartments, and Incredible Edibles Community Garden will be taking part in the discussion. The workshop is being hosted by Healthy Loma Linda in association with the San Bernardino County Healthy Communities Initiative, the City of Loma Linda, and Loma Linda University. It is taking place on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Loma Linda Civic Center Community Room, 25541 Barton Rd., Loma Linda. The event is free and community members are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
