During Black History Month, the Workforce Development Board remembers Dr. Audrey Mathews, educator, activist, and mentor whose tireless work in promoting workforce and career development helped to transform countless lives throughout San Bernardino County.

From 2009 until her passing in 2020, Mathews served with honor and distinction as a member of the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board and as a committee member for its successor, the Workforce Development Board. As Chair of the Legislative Committee, she advocated for laws and resources to help job seekers gain life-changing career skills and pursue opportunities they never imagined possible.

Born in Chicago, Mathews would spend time in Los Angeles County and Washington, D.C. before settling in San Bernardino County. She devoted more than 35 years working in state and local government as a professor, budget director, planning director and consultant.

The Workforce Development Board is proud to name the East Valley America’s Job Center of California’s conference room in honor of Mathews, whose commitment to public service, academic achievement and providing a higher level of opportunity for all citizens continues to make a difference throughout the community she adopted as her home.
