LOMA LINDA>> During the past year, the communities of Loma Linda, San Bernardino, Rancho Cucamonga and other cities have experienced a rash of crimes relating to mail theft. The most common features of these crimes have been large community mailboxes being broken into. Suspects in these types of cases utilize victims' information to conduct identity theft, false impersonation, etc. Additionally, many pieces of mail contain credit cards or checks that the suspects use to make illegal transactions in the victims' names. On September 13, 2016, Deputy B. Ortiz, from the Sheriff's Central Station, investigated a case where a suspect named Daniel Bustos was arrested for mail theft, check fraud and identity theft. As a result of that investigation Deputy Ortiz authored a search warrant which yielded three additional arrests for similar charges. The persons arrested in that case were Linda Crume, Tina Nolan and Juan Herrera. Ortiz continued his investigation and gathered additional evidence that incriminated Anthony Garcia. Garcia was found to be an associate of the suspects named above. Garcia was found to be in possession of credit card and personal identity information for several more victims. As a result of his investigation, Ortiz was able to link his investigation to a Rancho Cucamonga case where Garcia is suspected of breaking into a community mailbox. Garcia, along with an unknown suspect, then used the stolen credit cards to make charges at a local retail store. Ortiz and other deputies from the Sheriff's Central Station have been working closely with federal agents in reference to the large amount of mail thefts in the Inland Empire. As a result of this joint effort, Garcia currently is incarcerated in a federal detention center in Los Angeles. Bustos is serving time in Glen Helen Jail after plead guilty to several Identity Theft charges. Bustos will then be transferred to federal custody for his involvement in mail theft. Garcia's case was forwarded to the San Bernardino District Attorney's Office and charges were filed. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Central station at (909)387-3545.
