A documentary presented by Journey films and created by Emmy Award winner Martin Doblmeier was screened for the first time at the Loma Linda University Church of Seventh-day Adventists on August 31. The film was a sequel to Doblmeier’s first documentary called “The ADVENTISTS,” which was inspired by his first trip to the city of Loma Linda, visiting and touring the grounds of Loma Linda Hospital. He understood the work being done in the medical facility and gained understanding that the missionaries of the Seventh-day Adventists represented a long-established faith which evolved well into the 21st century. One result of their faith was an interest in developing technology in the medical field. In the documentary “The ADVENTISTS 2,” which Doblmeier began to film in 2010, he shared the stories and backgrounds of Adventist doctors, surgeons, nurses, and volunteers from the healthcare industry who have traveled globally to make a difference in the lives of those who were without exposure to the healthcare they needed. Moving across different regions like the banks of the Amazon river in Brazil, Malawi in Africa, the coasts of Peru, and Haiti, which had been devastated by the massive earthquake in January 2010, Doblmeier explained, “I wanted to capture moments of those in service who were also making a difference, in hopes of exposing the initiative and service of many Adventists and other Christians in changing people’s lives as they genuinely took time out to leave their homes in the States to make the commitment of helping others.” Scott Nelson, M.D., a volunteer and Loma Linda graduate with over 13 years of experience in orthopedic surgery, was featured in Martin Doblmeier’s film “The ADVENTISTS 2.” He explained the story of three orphaned Haitian children who had been struggling with broken bones and deformities. Nelson shared, “Coming outside of the States to help others in need, I viewed this as an opportunity to facilitate,” then added during his guest speech, “[With] Martin Doblmeier creating a documentary film such as this, I know it inspires everyone to make that personal commitment to be of service to others—allowing God to use them just as he has used all of us.” Martin Doblmeier also included ADRA, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency International, a non-profit organization with a goal of providing care by boats to rural areas among jungles and wild waters, special guest speaker and president of ADRA Jonathan Duffey mentioned, “I have been in public health for the past 28 years and have seen almost every clinic. I am proud of the growth of commitment and support of the Adventist Church, which has helped over 30.5 million people.” “The ADVENTISTS 2” will be premiering on the local TV station KVCR-PBS on September 18 at 8 p.m.
