Congressman Mark Takano from California’s 41st District (D-Riverside) visited Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) on Friday, July 5. Congressman Takano toured the James M. Slater, MD Proton Treatment and Research Center and met with Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH, president of LLUH. The Riverside native enjoyed his tour of the campus and revealed he learned a lot about the health system. “Dr. Hart explained the importance of federal funding in support of graduate medical education and federally qualified health centers,” Takano said after the meeting. “I also gained an understanding of the importance of Loma Linda University School of Medicine to the Inland Empire.” Congressman Takano, Dr. Hart and Corey Jackson, district director for Takano, discussed a number of important topics related to health care, education, veterans’ affairs, and medicine after the tour. Of the meeting and tour, Dr. Hart said, “This was an opportunity for Loma Linda University Health to share with the Congressman how we collaborate with the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans Medical Center in caring for our local veterans and the role Loma Linda plays in Graduate Medical Education in this area.”
