1,000 Books Before Kindergarten!

Our little bookworms are officially kindergarten-ready! We are so proud of these rockstar readers who conquered the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” challenge in July at their local County Library branch.

Before these little learners have even set foot in a classroom, they’ve already reached an extraordinary milestone: 1,000 books read. This July, San Bernardino County Library (SBCL) branches proudly celebrated their newest graduates of the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, honoring young “super readers” who took on the challenge one story at a time.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative is designed to foster a love of reading from the very beginning, encouraging parents and caregivers to share stories daily with their children. By logging books read at home, during story time, or even at bedtime, families help their little ones gain the early literacy skills that form the foundation for future academic success.

“This program is about more than just numbers — it’s about building connections, sparking imagination, and creating positive reading habits that will last a lifetime,” said SBCL Program Coordinator Elizabeth Williams. “We are so proud of these families for making reading a joyful part of their everyday lives.”

Participants who completed the challenge received recognition from the library, along with the pride of knowing they’ve given their children a strong start in learning. July’s graduates join a growing community of readers who prove that the journey to 1,000 books begins with the simple joy of one story shared together.

Families interested in enrolling their children in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program can sign up online. For more information about the San Bernardino County Library system, visit library.sbcounty.gov, call 909-387-2220 or follow us on Facebook or Instagram.

The County Library strives to provide equal access to information, technology, programs and services for all people who call San Bernardino County home.
