As summer winds down and children return to school, Riverside families are closing the chapter on another season filled with recreation, friendships and opportunities to learn outside the classroom.

The City of Riverside Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department offered an extensive collection of summer camps for children and teenagers ages 3 through 17. Programs ranged from preschool activities and inclusive recreation to full-day camps, swimming and activities for teens.

Among the most accessible offerings was the Sun & Fun Day Camp, a free program for children ages 5 to 12 at Lincoln and Bryant parks. Sessions ran throughout June and July and concluded August 7. Activities offered through Riverside's summer camps included arts and crafts, games, sports, dance and other group activities.

Other options provided families with different levels of supervision and programming. S.T.A.R. Camp at Bordwell Park offered full-day care, while Teen Venture Camp served youth ages 12 to 17 through the Youth Opportunity Center. Summer Splash Day Camp at Hunt and Villegas parks combined traditional camp activities with aquatic recreation.

Summer recreation also included opportunities for Riverside's youngest residents. Little Totters Summer Camp served children ages 3 to 5 at Hunt, Orange Terrace and Reid parks. At Nichols Park, the Little Explorers Inclusive Day Camp offered programming for the same age group, with its final summer session continuing through August 28.

The variety matters because recreation can serve several purposes for local families at once. Children have opportunities to stay physically active, practice social skills and discover new interests, while parents gain structured activities during weeks when school is not in session.

Riverside also extended summer recreation beyond camps. The city's 2026 calendar included Movies in the Park, Summer Fun Concerts, the Riverside Regatta and other community gatherings at parks across Riverside.

The City's current Parks, Recreation and Community Services mission emphasizes recreational experiences and social enrichment for people of different ages and backgrounds, using Riverside's parks, trails and community facilities as gathering places.

As backpacks replace beach towels and classrooms replace summer camps, the experiences created in Riverside's parks do not simply disappear. New friendships, greater confidence and memories of afternoons spent playing outdoors can follow children into the school year.

For Riverside families, that may be the most lasting value of summer recreation. The programs fill a few weeks on the calendar, but the experiences they create can stay with children long after summer ends.
