LOMA LINDA>> While most children look forward to the gifts they will receive on their birthday, Ulysses Hsu, 9, of Eastvale, asked his friends to donate to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital instead. Hsu is a junior philanthropist who donated money from his eighth birthday in 2016 to LLU Children’s Hospital in honor of a friend who had cancer. This year, Hsu went back to the hospital Monday, March 6 with a check of more than $1,600 from his ninth birthday. Hospital mascot Luke the Lion along with patients and staff were there to celebrate his donation. In a video montage that the hospital made, Hsu said he was inspired by his friend who has cancer and said he wants to help other children. “A lot of children have cancer, so I want to help those people feel better,” Hsu said in the video. “Life is more important than gifts. Life lasts longer than gifts and toys, and I want to bring happiness to life and those children.”
